Step 1: check whether it is correct
Confirm the CCJ is valid — the debt genuinely owed, the judgment properly served. If you never received the claim, or the debt is disputed or not yours, you may have grounds to challenge it rather than simply pay.
Step 2: apply to set aside an incorrect judgment
Where a CCJ was issued in error — you were not properly notified, or have a real defence — you can apply to the court to set it aside. If granted, the judgment is cancelled and the credit mark removed. This is the route for a genuinely wrong CCJ.
Step 3: pay within a month to remove it
If the CCJ is valid, paying the full amount within one month of the judgment lets you apply to have it removed from the register entirely. Pay later, and it stays for six years but can be marked "satisfied". Either way, resolve it. See CCJs and business lending.
Step 4: get it marked satisfied
Once a valid CCJ is paid beyond the one-month window, obtain confirmation and ensure the register and your credit report show it as satisfied. A satisfied judgment reads far better to lenders than an outstanding one. See checking your report.
Rebuild after resolving
With the CCJ resolved, rebuild your record and show affordability plainly on any application.

Frequently asked questions
Can I remove a CCJ from my company's record?
If it was issued in error, you can apply to the court to set it aside, cancelling it. If it is valid and you pay in full within a month of judgment, you can have it removed from the register.
What happens if I pay a CCJ late?
It stays on the register for six years but can be marked satisfied once paid. A satisfied judgment reads far better to lenders than an outstanding one, so paying and getting it marked is worthwhile.
How do I challenge a CCJ I dispute?
If you were not properly notified or have a genuine defence, apply to the court to set the judgment aside. Check the debt and service are valid first, then follow the court's set-aside process.
