Definition

EBIT is earnings before interest and tax, otherwise known as operating profit. It shows the profit a business generates from its core trading, before the cost of financing and before tax — a clean view of operational performance.

Why it matters

EBIT is the starting point for the interest cover ratio and, with non-cash items added back, for EBITDA and the cash figure in DSCR. See calculating interest cover.
